City and Guilds Basketry Level 3

In October 2019 I started a two year City and Guilds course at Level 3 in Basketry at Westhope College. With all the Christmas preparation, markets and commissions it has been a manic first three months.


The course is the first qualification at this level in Basketry and I am really excited to be studying the craft with such inspirational tutors as Clare Revera Welsh Baskets and Eddie Glew Blithfield Willowcrafts as well as alongside some brilliant students. This two year course was designed by Clare, and the traditional elements this year include, square work, frame baskets and advanced techniques, including elements such as mould work, scalloming and fitching.


Over the first three months we have been working with Clare and then Eddie on square basketry. I can’t say I have found this easy. However, I am starting to appreciate how much the knowledge of the different types of square work and the development of my skill in this area will contribute to my overall ability as a basketmaker, and even if I don’t make loads of square baskets, this knowledge is fundamental.
